Business Software Group is driving the consolidation of business software in Spain with a decentralized model and an international ambition, combining acquisitions, sector knowledge, and sustainable growth. We speak with its CEO, Ventura Gil.
What exactly is Business Software Group and what problem in the business software market does it intend to solve for Spanish companies?
BSG is a group of software companies formed and managed by entrepreneurs from the sector itself. We share the same vision: improving our companies, exchanging knowledge, and offering greater value to our customers. More than a traditional business group, we are a platform of companies that grow by learning from each other and actively contribute to strengthening the software sector in Spain.
BSG brings deep knowledge of the software sector, along with a team of experts that support companies in their key challenges: product, technology, growth, and talent management.
The group has grown rapidly through acquisitions. What have been the main milestones of growth in recent years, and what size does BSG manage today?
Since our start in 2020, we have completed 27 acquisitions, This makes us the most active consolidator in Spain within the sector. Over this time, we have managed to improve the profitability of the group's companies through active management and a disciplined approach to operational improvement. Additionally, we have initiated our international expansion in Latin America.
Currently, the group exceeds the 60 million euros in turnover. Our goal is to close the year in 80 million and reach more than 100 million in the next exercise.
The business software sector in Spain is very fragmented. What opportunity did BSG see in this fragmentation and how does its consolidation strategy fit into this context?
The fragmentation of the market creates a clear opportunity to create value through consolidation. By integrating companies, we generate synergies in areas such as upselling and cross-selling, operational efficiency, and knowledge sharing. Additionally, one of the most distinctive aspects of our model is transforming competitors into collaborators, fostering partnerships that enable the generation of more collective value for the end customer.
The group’s model is defined as decentralized. How is each company’s autonomy combined with synergies and common management within the group?
At BSG, we centralize certain non-core functions to reduce the operational burden on the companies and free up the teams, allowing them to focus on their core business. In this way, each company can be fully focused on the customer and on generating the maximum value possible, while maintaining its identity and culture, which is what makes it unique in the market.
Additionally, at BSG we act as a strategic partner, providing insights, playbooks owners and best practices in key capabilities such as go-to-market, technology, and artificial intelligence.
What does it change for a software company when it becomes part of BSG in terms of investment, growth, or access to the market?
BSG has a long-term approach based on a strategy of buy and hold, which allows us to drive strategic initiatives that generate sustained value over time, such as Prana Software. Companies benefit from the accumulated experience within the group and from the application of playbooks owners in key areas, which translates into significant improvements in growth and profitability. We internally call this impact the "BSG effect".
Furthermore, being part of the group allows access to larger projects and the development of joint strategies with other companies in the portfolio, thus expanding market opportunities. Internationalization is also a key priority, actively supporting companies in their expansion.
Many of the group's companies operate in vertical niches. Is this sectoral specialization one of the keys to the BSG model?
Yes, it is one of the key elements of our model. We focus on vertical niches because they allow us to work more closely with clients and deeply understand their needs, which makes it easier to generate solutions of greater value and build leadership positions in each segment.
BSG has spearheaded dozens of acquisitions in a few years. What profile of Spanish independent software companies are they currently looking for to join the group?
We are looking for B2B software companies with mission-critical solutions that provide high added value to their customers. We prioritize companies with recurring revenue, strong leadership teams, and professional management. They usually operate in specialized niches where they are already leaders or can become leaders in their segment. Our goal is to help them scale, professionalize their structure, and consolidate their position within a broader group.
What investment volume does BSG plan to make in the coming years to continue adding software companies in Spain, and what role does it want to play in the consolidation of the sector?
We expect to invest more than 250 million euros in the coming years to continue adding companies to the group. Since 2020 we have been the most active consolidator in the sector in Spain, and our goal is to consolidate BSG as the leading business software industry group in Europe.
We want to continue expanding our presence in various verticals, drive our international expansion, and establish ourselves as the strategic partner of choice for technology companies looking to grow, professionalize, and scale sustainably.
